Kids ATVs - Putting Safety First
May 30, 2009
One of the fastest growing all terrain vehicle sectors in recent years has been the kids atv and youth atv market. Now, I wish this had been the case 30 years ago as I would have qualified to ride this fantastic machines. These days I can’t help look back in envy at the fun todays youngsters have playing on scaled down versions of adult machines.
Of course, as a parent, the prospect of your youngest son or daughter tearing around around on a gas powered speed machine is probably a little daunting. Now I’m not going to advocate one way or the other whether letting kids own this machines is a good or bad thing - you wouldn’t have kept me away - and so understanding this the least you can do is make sure they are as safe as humanly possible.
So what is the best way to achieve this?
First of all, supervision. Make sure adult supervision is always on hand and ensure your child is appropriately safety briefed.
Secondly, ensure the atv is suitable for a child or youth. Such machines are smaller, lighter and often come with additional safety features such as speed locks.
Thirdly, ensure appropriate safety gear is worn at all times. This includes a chest/shoulder protector, boots, goggles, helmet, knee guards, riding gloves, kidney belt and elbow protectors.
Taking these sensible precautions will help minimize the risk of injury.
